ISSUE NO 166                                                                                                        OCTOBER 2009

Dear Members,

No guff this month so let’s get onto the news.........................................................

CLUB NEWS

OPEN COMBINED FITA ( UKRS ) – SUNDAY 18TH OCTOBER 2009

This is the first of 5 shoots between now and March 2010, and will take place on the above date.

For the benefit of newer members the round is as follows.

5dozen arrows are shot from 25m at a 60cm Portsmouth face which you will be familiar with. After the lunch break you then move down to 18m and you shoot another 5dozen arrows at a 40cm target face. All our established members will also be familiar with this smaller face it’s just that some of them are too terrified to shoot at them!

Your scores for the 2 distances are then combined to give you a total score for the round.

A perfect score would be 1200.

Those of you who have been with us some time will know that rounds such as our Portsmouth usually involve one group of archers shooting in the morning and a second group shooting in the afternoon. However, due to the fact that we cannot do 2 rounds then this means that only a maximum of 44 archers on 11 bosses can shoot due to safety issues in the morning session. When we move to the 18m shooting – line then this enables us to use targets 12 and 13. So this year it has been decided that any archer who only wants to do the 18m/ session may do so although there will only be 8 spaces available and no awards will be made. Sighter arrows are only allowed for the 25m distance but any archer shooting the 18m single afternoon session will be allowed sighters. As spaces will be limited, I advise you to see Adelle if you wish to enter or get your own entry in ASAP.

This is a Record Status Shoot so as club colours may not be ready then you will have to wear the regulation colours of white and / or plain dark green. Cream, beige, olive or khaki is not permitted.

One thing I forgot to add in the last newsletter is that all Record Status Shoots are liable for drug testing so if a junior enters then a parent or guardian MUST sign the entry form consenting to their child being tested if required. A refusal will be treated as a positive result. However, in my 17 years at Lasswade drug – testing has never taken place.

All new and existing members are also reminded that several weeks prior to the shoot on Saturday nights ONLY the 25m shooting – line will be used to enable any member or visitor who is taking part to get a decent sight – mark. If anybody wants to shoot 20 yards then these targets will be brought closer so that everybody shoots from the same line.

As with all our shoots it would be appreciated if members can stay behind to get things set up on the Saturday night and to possibly help get things packed away on the Sunday especially if they live locally and are / are not shooting. I hope I do not have to rely on visitors to do this as this is your club and you must learn how to do things.

These tournaments are a major source of income for the Club and if the usual few decided to give up running them then you would probably see an increase in your Club fees to cover potential short – falls!

We usually run a raffle before the presentations at our shoots so any donations will be most welcome. If you have any questions then please see me or a committee member.

GOODBYE!

Now that most of us have re – affiliated for another year it is usual for some members to drop out sometimes after only a short space of time.

This year our Vice President, Frank Harrison, has had to leave us due to problems with his neck, which may be aggravated if he continues to shoot on a regular basis. I think his neck problems are caused by his better half, Sandra, who has to throttle him to get her house – keeping money!

Frank joined us in 2002 and served as our Club Treasurer for several years before he returned to full – time employment some years later, which had also encroached on his shooting time. He will be missed.

One of our former junior members Jakub Srsen has also left us. Jakub joined us in 2003 and has gone to Swansea University to study engineering.

On behalf of the Club I wish him well and hope that he may visit us if his studies permit. However, Jakub’s sister Katryn will remain with us. It won’t be easy but I will cope somehow! HA! HA!

COACHING

Some of you may remember that during the last indoor season Billy and Richard ran a few Wednesday night sessions to try and bring on some of our newer and existing members and these sessions appeared to be popular. I now think it is time for our newer members to consider what they want to achieve in the sport. If they want to just shoot some arrows then that is fine. If they want to progress then they will have to put in the required effort. They cannot expect to win awards just by shooting a few arrows each week.

To that end it has been agreed to accept Billy’s proposal that on the SECOND AND FOURTH Wednesday of each month where practical that 2 targets will be set aside for coaching only.

I hope that some of you will support Billy on this matter as he is giving up his own shooting time to help you. However, no – one is obliged to take part and the sessions will last for about an hour initially.

Billy seems to be in top form as he has also suggested having a once a month outdoor session on a Sunday. Naturally, this will only be possible if enough members wish to do this.

If this were to take off then the Club would have to see how the additional field hire charges would be met.

THE GREEN STORAGE CABINET

I am sure most of you will recognise the storage cabinet where the target faces and other items are stored.

During the outdoor season Derek took the cabinet away for some modifications with particular regard to the security of the stored items.

In the event of a key – holder not attending then ANY MEMBER OLD OR NEW should get the spare keys from the reception desk.

Two keys are now needed and one has a red fob and the other one has a black fob.

The red – fobbed key opens the padlock for the drawer and the black – fobbed key opens the long – shackled padlock, which allows both the old and new doors to be opened.

The old door on the right hand side allows access to the target faces and the new left hand door access to the club arrows although under normal circumstances the rank and file members should have no valid reason for removing the arrows. A spare black – fobbed key is also inside the drawer for the long – shackled padlock.

As always if you have to get these keys from the reception then please remember to return them after the club session has finished.

THE CLUB WHISTLE

I have been somewhat irritated, especially on Saturday nights , that many members seem to stare at me like moon – struck calves waiting for me to blow the

CLUB WHISTLE

particularly if I am trying to do other duties.

To that end if members (seniors only) do not take it upon themselves to use it then I will be suggesting to the committee that after the beginners class has finished a rota will be made up with the appropriate member doing the whistle duties for that session. This is after all Lasswade Archery Club NOT Donald’s Archery Club!
