Dear Members,

Welcome to the first edition of 2007.

CLUB NEWS

CLOSURE OF SPORTS HALL

Due to the laying of a new floor in the games hall and other work at the Centre I can now conform the dates when we will not be able to shoot.

They are as follows:-

Wednesday   31sat January,

      “              7th     February,

      “             14th          “

and

Saturday       3rd      February,

       “            10th          “

       “            17th          “           .

This means the last shooting session will be on Saturday 27th January, and we will recommence on Wednesday 21st February.

It is hoped there will be no delays in the work to be carried out in the Centre.

Although I have no definite information we may a few non-shooting Club nights where we can perhaps get some maintenance done on our equipment if need be. We could also do other things such as arrow fletching, string-making plus anything else Club members may wish to suggest. I have also been in contact with my opposite number at Penicuik AC and if any of you wish to shoot at Penicuik we have agreed to pay your target fees. Penicuik shoot on Friday evenings from 7pm to 9.30pm.and Sunday mornings from 9am to 11.30am. Please note there will be no Penicuik session on Sunday 4th of February.

As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter please be on your best behaviour and take your GNAS card with you. I can provide directions if you require them on how to get there. The venue is Beeslack High School, Edinburgh Road, Penicuik.

S.A.A.  AFFILIATION FEES.

At the S.A. A. AGM last month it was agreed that the current senior fees of £21 be increased to £24 which will come into effect for the 2007-08 affiliation season.

There may also be an increase in the GNAS  fee but this will not be decided until their AGM in April.

CLUB CONSTITUTION

At the time of preparing this month’s newsletter the new amended Club Constitution was still not ready. It is hoped we will have it ready soon and all members will receive a copy in due course.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

This years Club Championships will take place on the 17th March and the round will be a Portsmouth. Further details on the shoot and how you can enter will appear in next month’s newsletter.

FROM THE ARCHIVES.

RULES OF SHOOTING   PART 1.

This item, the first of three parts, was submitted for issue 25 (Jan 98) and repeated in issue 77 (May 02) by a former Club member Watty Wyse. At the time Watty had taken up judging and I thought that it would be quite informative to repeat these items once again especially for our newer members.

Rules! Who needs them, you may ask yourself. Well the fact is we all need them. Rules are there to ensure that justice is done and that nobody has an unfair advantage over the rest. At competitions the person who will interpret the rules is the JUDGE. The judge is there to explain the rules and see that a sense of fair play exists, so that all the archers can produce their best. So if you are in doubt please ask a judge.

In the UK we operate with two sets of rules, which does add to the confusion,

They are:-

1.      Federation International de Tir a ‘l’ arc (FITA)

2.      Grand National Archery Society.(GNAS)

When shooting metric distances, we observe the rules of FITA, and when the distances are in good old -fashioned yards, the rules are predominantly GNAS with a hint of FITA.

Often archers turn up to shoot not properly attired for the dress regulation, this is not always the fault of the archers, but due to their Club not keeping them properly informed.

GNAS rule 307 is the dress code, which states that all competitors should wear clothing which is coloured dark green or white or a mixture of both, and that the accepted dress for ladies being a skirt/dress, trousers/shorts and a suitable top (not strapless or beachwear).

Gentlemen should wear trousers or shorts and a long or short- sleeved shirt. Sweater, cardigans and blazers may be worn if they of the appropriate colour. Shoes must be worn and although not stipulated, but highly recommended for safety reasons, they should not be open toed.

The above rule covers all National Record status and all FITA STARS. Any archer who is not properly attired may be asked to leave the shooting line. This rule applies to Officials as well as Archers. You may be asking yourself why we must wear these colours? Other than being the dress code of GNAS, and it looks good to spectators, it also assists the Judge to identify archers from onlookers who may trespass into the shooting arena as they will probably be wearing multi- coloured clothing.

There are occasions where this rule is

waived, such as when you are shooting for your country you are allowed to wear the official team colours.

Our aim is to help you enjoy your chosen sport, so if there is anything you would like clarified, or a particular subject covered, please speak to our Judge Derek Sangster.

             By WATTY WYSE.

P.S.

Providing a Club has registered them through GNAS a Club may shoot in Club colours of their choice. Lower garments such as trousers must still be dark-green or white.

NEXT  MONTH : The Whistle and Time Control.

TOURNAMENT REPORT

Thanks to those members who helped get the range set up on the Saturday night and thanks also to some of the visiting archers who got everything put away after to shoot.
