CLUB NEWS
OUTDOOR CLUB SESSIONS

On Wednesday the 5th of May we will be moving outdoors on Wednesday evenings until the end of August. Most of you who have been with the Club for some time will know what is involved so this item is mainly for our newer members who have not shot outdoors before. As we have taught you indoors the main thing to remember are the basic safety rules. While it is not normally a problem you should remember that we are more at risk of non-archers straying on to the taped off area of our shooting range so remember what “ FAST” means. Even if you are unsure, do not hesitate to call FAST if you see a potential problem. DO NOT assume that everyone will be aware of a problem.

Our outdoor sessions usually start by 6.45pm and bear in mind that unlike indoors we have to set up the range ourselves so the more members who arrive on time then the quicker we can start shooting. While it is accepted that some of you may not always arrive on time then it is hoped that you will have the decency to help put things away at the end of the session. In the event of bad weather we also have the option of going in to the Sports Centre to do some equipment maintenance but not to shoot however. One last point to remember is that the area we shoot on is also used by the school pupils so if you have any misses or overshoots then let us know so we can search for any missing arrows. In other words if you shoot 6 arrows an end then return to the waiting area with 6 arrows.

P.S. All outdoor sessions are not affected by any school or public holidays.
P.P.S. Some committee members will have a set of keys for the outdoor store. In the event no key holders attend then the Sports Centre will have a set but remember to return the keys back to the Reception Desk after everything is locked up.

CLUB FEES

By now the deadline for the 2010/11 Club fees will have passed. This deadline only affects those of you who pay your fees as a one-of or in cash instalments. If you have not done so then you are no longer a member but you can still shoot until your affiliation runs out in September. You will however have to pay a visitor’s fee of £3.50 and £2.00 for outdoor sessions

ARCHERY WORLD CUP – 2010 “COME & TRY SESSIONS – 18TH/19TH OF SEPTEMBER – UPDATE

I talked about this subject in last month’s edition and I can now inform you that our application to run one of these sessions has been accepted. In addition to Lasswade six other clubs have also replied which means one session is vacant. At this moment in time I do not know what session we will be allocated or which club will be asked to run the vacant session. I will of course keep you up – dated when I have more information.

JACK IN / JACK OUT!

A warm welcome to a new member who has joined our band of merry men ( and women ). The gentleman in question is Jack Corps ( pronounced Core ) who is affiliated through Heriot-Watt University but wants more shooting experience. Oh! Please note. No jokes about dead bodies as I am sure he has heard them all!

Just when we gain a new Jack another Jack goes out. I am of course referring to a long –standing member, Jack Feeley who, now that he has turned 18 (and turned a few stomachs as well,Ha! Ha!), has decided to leave us. Can I just say Jack on behalf of the Club Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!! No seriously, we wish you well in whatever you end up doing.

CLUB POLO SHIRTS

I would like to thank you for the excellent response with reference to the orders you have put in for the Club polo shirts which is in excess of 20 shirts and I hope that the order will be placed soon. When we have received the order all members will pay for the shirts they have ordered BEFORE they are issued with them. Payments can be in cash for £12.99p or by a cheque made payable to the Club for the correct amount.

TOURNAMENT REPORTS
LASSWADE INDOOR OPEN (UKRS) (1200) – MARCH 7TH 2010

Five members entered this Double Fita 18 Metre round which involves shooting a morning session and an afternoon session to obtain the potential double score of 1200. There was some doubt if it would take place but by the closing date for entries the shoot was full with a waiting list. Not bad when you consider that some of the top Scottish archers were away on other duties. After the presentations our organiser Tina asked if the archers wanted to do this round again in 2011 and judging by the response this is what will probably happen next year.

The results for our members were as follows with the AM and PM sessions followed by the combined score: -

  AM PM COMBINED
LADIES RECURVE
5th Adelle 482 420 902
GENTS RECURVE
21st Ian H 351 417 768
24th Eddie 331 - AM Session Only

8th Phil 534 530 1064

Ian H 768

Thank you to those members who helped get things ready on the Saturday night and helped after the shoot was completed on the Sunday. A final thank you once again to Tina.

INDOOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS ( 600 ) – 13TH MARCH 2010

About 50% of the membership entered this year which was once again a nice safe Portsmouth round. Some average scores were shot and 3 members shot new personal bests for the Portsmouth.

In the ladies section Adelle was in a class of her own and retained the Ladies Quaich. In the gents section David R won by a comfortable margin to take the Gents Quaich for the eighth year in succession. It was business as usual amongst the juniors with Gareth over 200 points ahead of the chasing pack which means his Quaich will also sit alongside Mummy Fleming’s for the second year.

There was a major shock in the compound section this year. BILLY GOT BEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For only the third time since 1998 he lost by 5 points caused by a fluffed shot near the end. So that young up-start Phil will give the compound Quaich a home for the next year. I assume most of you will have seen the results on the Club Notice Board. If you have not then here they are again.

It was a bit of a challenge this year trying to make up a target list, as I had to allow for senior/junior and experienced/ non-experienced members. There are a few matters, which I need to bring to the attention of some of you.

First, if you put an arrow value in the wrong box or write the wrong arrow value down then this MUST corrected by a judge NOT yourselves. Depending on the layout of the score-sheet once the judge has corrected your error in RED INK he/she will also initial the correction. You DO NOT do this yourself. However, if you make an arithmetical error you are permitted to change this yourselves.

When scoring your arrows call out your values and mark them down in DESCENDING ORDER on the score sheet e.g. 10,9,8 not 8,9,10 or any other combinations. Mark all misses with an ‘M’ and if say you have no golds to mark down then use a dash NOT a zero in the golds or hits columns. At the end of the shoot sign for your score but ensure it is correct. If double scoring is being used then check that the 2 scores tally. If you sign for 2 different scores then the LOWER score is the one that will be used to decide placings and awards. Some archers also like to keep a record of their score so this should be done as the shoot progresses NOT after it.

I am well aware that some of you lack the experience with regard to scoring but most of this is covered in the New Members Information Pack so please read it if you have not already done so! Phew! Now that you have had a crash course in scoring I would like to thank the following with regard to our Club Championships:-

JOAN: Liquid Refreshments.
ADELLE:Edible Refreshments.
THE CLUB:Easter Eggs.
LAYOUT OF REFRESHMENTS: Katryn’s dad,Susan and the Guest Boys grandmother.
LADY PARAMOUNT: Susan Wightman.
EVERYTHING ELSE: Me.
Well I had to thank myself because nobody else did!
