ISSUE NO. 184 APRIL 2011

Dear Members,

Welcome to a pre-outdoor edition of your much loved newsletter.

CLUB NEWS

OUTDOOR CLUB SESSIONS

On Wednesday the 4th of May we will be making the short walk to the outdoor range on Wednesday evenings through to the end of August.
Most of you who have been with the Club for some time will know what is involved so this item will be of particular interest for our newer members.
As we have taught you indoors the main thing to remember are the basic safety rules.
While it is not normally a problem you should remember that we are more at risk of               non-archers straying on to our taped off shooting range so remember what FAST means.
Even if you are un-sure, do not hesitate to call FAST if you think you have seen a potential hazard. DO NOT   assume that everyone will be aware of a problem.
Our outdoor sessions usually start by 6.45pm and bear in mind that unlike indoors we have to set up the range ourselves so the more members who arrive on time then the quicker we can start shooting.
While it is accepted that some of you may not always arrive on time then at least have the decency to help put things away at the end of the sessions.
In the event of bad weather we also have the option of going into the Sports Centre to do some equipment maintenance but not to shoot however.
One major thing to remember is that the area we shoot on is also used by the school pupils      ( though not at the same time!) so if you have any overshoots then let us know so we can search for any missing arrows as not all arrows shot will be sticking up-right in the ground
some may be under the surface! So, in other words, if you shoot 6 arrows then make sure you return to the waiting area with 6 arrows.
We also hope this season, if space permits, to have a split range as last year some members complained that too much time was being wasted looking for over shoots etc due to some members trying to shoot longer distances which were outside their abilities.
To that end if you have little or no experience then start at the 30m/30y target until you have the experience to progress to the longer distances. Once you have a decent grouping at each distance make sure you make a note of your sight mark for each distance so you are not spending time trying to get a proper sight mark/s week after week.

P.S. All outdoor Club sessions are not affected by any school or public holidays.

P.P.S.  Some committee members will have a set of keys for the outside store. In the event no key-holders attend then the Sports Centre will have a set but remember to return the keys back to the Reception Desk after everything is locked up.

CLUB FEES

By now the deadline for the 2011/2012 fees will have passed.
This deadline affects all members who have not paid their one of annual fee or those who have allowed there arrangements with their banks to lapse.
If this is the case then you will no longer be a member and you will have to pay a visitor’s target fee. In addition you will also have to become a direct member of GNAS and this dearer option would have to be arranged by yourselves.

BIRTHDAYS!

At the time of last year’s affiliations GNAS were asking if all members could provide their birthdates for the affiliation paperwork. I asked you all to inform me of your dates but some of you did not respond. I don’t know why this information has been requested but if they or I do not know when you become 60 then you will not receive your SAA discount or any future benefits. If you do not want to give me your dates then I do not have an issue with that.
So for the final time I will ask the following to advise me of their dates:-

ADELLE      ANN*     BILLY     BRIAN      DAVID R *     JOAN      JON     KEITH  RICHARD (V)  AND   SCOTT.

*Already over 60. Who knows perhaps you get another discount when you hit 70!

NEW MEMBERS

Yet another beginners’ class ended last month so a toasty welcome to the following (well it makes a change from the usual warm welcome!):- Martin Docherty (Deklyn’s Daddy) and 2 junior boys, Lewis Harrison and Jack Valentine. In addition an overdue welcome to Tommy Menzies who is already an established archer and a few months ago joined our band of merry  men and women! Sorry for the omission Tommy!
As if things could not get any worse we have also been joined by another Richard by the name of Richard Payne. However I told this Richard that he is not the pain it’s the other one that is! Ha! Ha!

OUTDOOR CLUB BOSSES

You may remember that last year we purchased 13 new tournament bosses meaning that 10 of the 2007 bosses became indoor club bosses. The remaining 3 from 2007 will be used for outdoor sessions and we will hopefully be able to get rid of at least 3 or more of the older outdoor bosses that we have used for some time now. My intention will be to give any of you a chance to take them away for your own use. If there is no response then I will arrange for the council to dispose of them. If you are interested then see me but remember that you will have to have the appropriate transport such as a trailer or roof –rack to remove them.

CLUB COMMITTEE MEETING

Brethren are cordially requested to attend the next meeting on Thursday 21st of April at     7.30 pm in classroom B4 of the High School.

CANCELLED SESSION

Due to the Easter Holiday there will be NO ARCHERY on Saturday the 23rd of April.
Although the Centre is open that day it will be closing earlier than usual.

TOURNAMENT REPORTS

LASSWADE INDOOR OPEN( UKRS) (1200) – MARCH 6TH – 2011

As with last year (and in 2012) this was a Double Fita 18m round with a maximum score of 1200 possible. Our only entrants this year were Derek, Ian H and Phil.
It was a day of mixed fortunes for them and their results were as follows with the AM scores followed by the PM scores and then the combined scores.

GENTS RECURVE

21st Ian H    AM (397)          PM (383)             COMBINED (780)

__   Derek   AM (N/A)         PM (486)              ( N/A)

GENTS COMPOUND

4th Phil       AM (547)           PM (542)             COMBINED (1089)    New PB

Everything went well with the shoot and my thanks to Tina for organising it once again.

INDOOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS (600) – MARCH 19TH – 2011

The usual opening to this annual report,” about 50% of the membership entered and shot a Portsmouth round!”
The ladies recurve trophy was retained by Adelle with Jane not too far behind in second place.
In the gents recurve group it was a foregone conclusion that we would have a new champion as the 8 times winner , David R, opted to shoot on the “Dark Side” this year.
So it is pleasing to report that the crown has passed to Derek who was the only gent recurve to break the 500 barrier. Geoff was runner-up and Ian H was just 3 points adrift of Geoff.in third.
The overall junior trophy was retained by Gareth for the third time with the lovely Katryn in second just ahead of Ian S in third.
I thought that the gents‘compound trophy could have gone to any - one of them this year and they did not disappoint me. It was a case of “The Master” regaining the trophy from his “Young Apprentice”, ( Billy and Phillip to the rest of you), with David R in third keeping them honest! If truth be told I think Phillip got a fright when he saw a former member who was shooting as a visitor in the compound group!
In the event some of you have not read the notice-board or don’t know where it is or what it is then here are the full results:-

AND FINALLY

I now bid a fond farewell to those of you who will now be going into your summer hibernation period which is to say you will not be shooting outdoors and I will be counting the days until I see you when we go back indoors in September.
However, I would like to offer you a few words of wisdom if you are going on holiday especially to far and distant places.

1 – Don’t drink the water.
2 – Take clean underwear.
3 – Never , repeat never offer to a carry a stranger’s luggage through customs unless your
      name is Katryn!!!!!  Ha! Ha!

This edition is finished.
