ISSUE 136                                                                                   APRIL 2007

Dear Members,

Welcome to the proceedings for the month of April.

CLUB NEWS

OUTDOOR SESSIONS FOR 2007

Remember from Wednesday 2nd May we will be shooting outdoors between 6.45 and 9pm.The more people who turn up early the quicker we can start shooting, as we have to set up the range ourselves. I am aware that there may be situations where you cannot always arrive on time although in some cases it is the usual case of laziness on the part of some members. So if you cannot arrive on time at least have the decency to help take down the range and get the equipment back into the store at the end of the session. If only a few members turn up then set up will be delayed until we have enough bodies.

Other points to remember!

(1)   In the event of poor weather conditions we can always go into the sports centre to work on our equipment but not to shoot.

(2)   Remember what the word “FAST”, means, don’t assume someone else will see a potential danger. If in doubt call “FAST”.

(3)   Most juniors will shoot 30 metres/yards and there will be no split range.

(4)   Juniors, if you shoot six arrows make sure you return with six arrows .If any are lost you must tell us at once so we can look for them.

The sport’s field is used for other sporting events so any arrows lost must be reported to the sports centre.

Juniors must also be aware that we shoot on the playing fields of the High School not the fields of Agincourt, so any deliberate over-shooting will not be tolerated! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

LASSWADE OUTDOOR EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE 2007

This year, at Mark’s suggestion we have decided to re-activate our outdoor league. around will be shot every month from May till August The round itself will be a Short Metric that is to say 3 dozen arrows at 50 metres and 3 dozen arrows at 30metres shot at an 80cm. face. Teams shall be made up as follows: Recurves, top 4 scores and Compounds, top 3 scores each month. As the teams are made up from the top scores for each month, team members can vary from month to month. Once Mark has received team scores for the month of May this will determine the number of teams and divisions for the season.

The intention is to hold each round on the second last Wednesday of each month, weather permitting. Any questions? Then see Mark.

TARGET BOSSES

It has been decided that we need to buy some new bosses as some of the indoor ones are now becoming too soft. Some of them will probably have to be dumped but there will be some with some life left in them. To that end, if any member is interested we will be selling these bosses off for £10 each on a first come first served basis. If any of you are interested then you will have to arrange to get them taken away yourself. Before the end of the indoor season we will sort out which ones need to be sold or dumped. See me if you would be interested.

SECOND HAND BOWS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT

I am aware that some of you from time to time buy new equipment and this often means you have the problem of off loading your old equipment. I have to inform you now that the club will not be able to buy any of your old equipment as amongst other reasons we simply do not have any more indoor storage room. However, if you so wish, we could probably advertise any of your unwanted equipment on our Club website.

P.S.: Gordon has a right handed chest guard he wants to pass on, see him if you are looking for one.

A QUESTION OF INSURANCE.

Is your equipment insured?

If not, you may want to consider doing so. Recently, a member’s bow, was suggested to have been damaged due to a football coming into our side of the hall. To date there has not been a resolution to the problem from the Sports Centre or the Midlothian Council’s insurers. So if your equipment is insured then check to see what the cover provides for and up-grade the cover as necessary.

If you download entry forms for tournaments away from Lasswade you may find that the host club may show a disclaimer. This usually means that the host club, their shooting venue and their local council are not responsible for any loss or damage to your equipment or other property e.g. your car, if you have travelled to the tournament venue. So take on board what I have said and give some thought to this subject!

ARCHERY UK.

One of our members recently informed me that he has not been receiving any editions of Archery UK.

It is quite normal not to receive any copies when you first join the club. As this member has been with us well over a year I would suggest that if you have not received a copy within 6 months then contact GNAS.

Archery UK. Is published 4 times a year, spring, summer, autumn and winter, and you are paying for it through your affiliation fees, so don’t lose out.

P.S. This is also a timely reminder that if you move to a new address then please let me know so I can notify GNAS. Failure to do so will mean that you will not receive any correspondence from GNAS e.g. Archery UK!

TOURNAMENT REPORT

INDOOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS (600)

17TH MARCH 2007

This year we changed the round back to a Portsmouth and 21 members made the effort to attend (what happened to the other 23?) and no fewer than 8 members shot new personal bests.

The gent’s quaich  was won for the fifth successive year by David R. AND Joan’s  quaich will be returning to Loanhead yet again. Her cat is delighted as Joan uses the quaich to store his hairbrush!

It was no change among our compounds with Billy winning by a comfortable margin to take the award for the ninth time in ten years. The junior group was slightly closer with 20 points separating first from third with John G. taking the silverware for the third time in four years. After the shoot finished we re-located

to the cafeteria where I worked out the results and Joan once again provided the refreshments. Thanks Joan!

And Finally/ GOD BLESS DADDY.

A father put his three year old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers which she ended by saying “God bless mummy, God bless daddy, God bless grandma and goodbye grandpa. The father said, “Why did you goodbye grandpa.” The little girl said, “I don’t know daddy it just seemed like the thing to do.” The next day grandpa died. Father thought it was a strange coincidence. A few months later father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers, which went like this, “God bless mummy, God bless daddy and goodbye grandma.”  Next day, grandma died. My- gosh, thought the father, this kid is in contact with the other side. Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say,” God bless mummy and goodbye daddy.” He practically went into shock. Couldn’t sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was as nervous as a cat all day, and had lunch sent in and watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be o.k. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home he stayed in the office drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived, he breathed a sigh of relief and went home. When he got home his wife said, ”I’ve never seen you work so late, what’s the matter?” He said, “I don’t want to talk about it. I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.” She said, ”You think you’ve had a bad day, you’ll never believe what happened to me. This morning the postman dropped dead on the doorstep.”

See you all next month,

                                               Donald.
